The term padded room, at one time, seemed to be exclusively used for mental health and/or psychiatric facilities. While these are still in use, the truth is, the applications for which these kinds of rooms are now used has expanded exponentially.

What were once colorless and lifeless rooms have since been transformed into colorful and comfortable spaces. Today, these rooms have reached a whole new level of acceptance in society and the benefits of them are becoming more clear by the day. These rooms are now found in a variety of settings, including residences, and are showing no signs of slowing down in the future. Whether they are being designed and built to reduce the risk of self-harm, or simply to induce a calming feeling for those with above average levels of anxiety or other disorders, the padded room is changing for the better.

As part of changing the stigma once associated with these rooms, let’s take a moment to highlight a few of the many applications we’ve designed these rooms for and how they ended up benefiting both the client and patient in the long run.

Residential

As we stated above, this is one of the fastest growing segments for customized padding. With parents of autistic children or children with other unique needs looking for solutions for their home life, these spaces are becoming a must-have for those with a little extra space to do so.

Many of the at-home builds we do are often managed by the parents who know their children and their individual preferences and sensitivities very well. In some cases, homeowners will look to build out a space with great sensory output through tactile, visual or auditory stimulation, while others will be looking to build out a calming, low-sensory space.

Schools and Educational Facilities

Another popular segment for padded and sensory rooms are schools and other educational facilities. With a broad range of students from a broad range of backgrounds, the need for these types of spaces seems to be growing by the day.

With anxiety and stress levels in children reaching all time highs, school administrators are scrambling to get the right processes and treatments in place for their students. Among many other initiatives, an inclusive padded space often lands high on the list.

Mental Health Facilities

While the need for a padded space in a mental health institution doesn’t seem like a new idea, the implementation of them has, in fact, taken a much different approach. In what used to traditionally be white and plain rooms in nature, are now featuring more color and sensory accessories to help patients heal rather than hurt. Becoming a more holistic treatment method, these spaces have proven to help those with a number of disorders including ADHD, autism, OCD and other psychiatric issues.

Corrections

Looking to reduce the risk of harm to both guards and prisoners alike, padded rooms inside jails and other correctional facilities remain a popular option and one that is still in high demand. Our seamless Protector Three product is a favorite with these facilities as it is easy to clean and dramatically reduces the risk for injury due to its smooth and seamless corners and angles.

These padded solutions are found in cells, training areas and communal spaces inside jails and penitentiaries.
