Designed to give users a calming and therapeutic environment to aid in regulating both their emotions and sensory processing, sensory rooms can now be found in a wide variety of spaces across the country. In addition to schools and educational facilities, these rooms are also found in rehabilitation centers, public spaces and even office environments.
Given that sensory rooms have been shown to provide emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits for people of all ages, our clients now range from a number of different industries and no two installations look the same. As such, here are a few key examples of how and where padded sensory rooms are utilized across a number of applications.
Schools (General & Special Education)
Sensory rooms are used to help students, particularly those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing disorders, self-regulate and refocus. These rooms are often equipped with soft lighting, weighted blankets, fidget tools, calming sounds, and tactile objects to create a soothing environment. Used to help students avoid meltdowns and improve focus in the classroom, we’re often called in to help create solely focused spaces or provide padding for existing ones already in place.

Hospitals & Mental Health Facilities
When it comes to healthcare facilities, sensory rooms are used to help patients experiencing anxiety, PTSD, or sensory overload in psychiatric and rehabilitation settings. Additionally, some emergency rooms and pediatric hospitals also have sensory-friendly spaces to reduce distress for patients with neurodiverse needs.
Addiction & Trauma Recovery Centers
A lot of our work is now focused on this unique subset of mental health and recovery as well. These sensory rooms are being used as part of a holistic treatment plan designed for individuals recovering from addiction, trauma, or PTSD. Without having to lean on medication or isolation techniques, these rooms have been proven to help regulate emotions more effectively.
Prisons & Juvenile Detention Centers
In perhaps our fastest-growing segment, prisons and correctional facilities are leaning on these types of safe and padded environments. Many correctional facilities are now using sensory rooms as a rehabilitative alternative to isolation or punishment, which helps individuals calm down and manage anger, stress, and anxiety through sensory input.

Workplaces & Public Spaces
Another emerging segment of use for these environments is coming from both workplaces and public spaces. We’re seeing a sharp increase in requests from offices, airports, and public venues are implementing sensory-friendly spaces for employees and visitors.
With the goal of reducing stress and creating an inclusive environment for individuals with neurodiverse needs, our sensory rooms have been proving to be effective for those who have installed them.
Nursing Homes & Dementia Care Centers
These safe environments are perfectly suited to help soothe individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s. As these patients often experience feelings of agitation or confusion, these rooms allow for the incorporation of familiar sounds, calming visuals and soft textures to help reduce stress and anxiety.
