We pride ourselves on being tapped to help solve complex architectural puzzles and our recent project at the University of Michigan Health’s Ypsilanti Health Center is a perfect example of what happens when innovative design meets professional installation.
When Michigan Medicine reached out, they needed more than just a regular old “padded room.” They were seeking a partner that could help them design a much needed safe and inviting sanctuary for their pediatric patients that was to become a calming room designed to provide comfort during difficult moments.
The project involved two primary walls, but there was a catch: one wall featured a significant curve. In our industry in particular, curves can be notoriously difficult. Given the unique design elements of the room, standard flat panels were no longer on the menu as they can create gaps, sharp corners, and a disjointed look that can actually be counter-productive in a de-escalation environment. To achieve a truly “custom” fit, our design team worked meticulously to ensure the padding followed the wall’s radius perfectly.

Our goal on this project was twofold and included safely eliminating any hard surfaces or gaps to protect children from self-injury. From an aesthetic standpoint, we also wanted to create a seamless, visually soothing environment that doesn’t feel “clinical” or “institutional.”
The new Ypsilanti Health Center is a state-of-the-art facility focused on bringing advanced care directly to the community. This specific calming room serves a vital role for the Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program and the Pediatric Developmental & Behavioral Clinic.
For children dealing with anxiety, sensory processing disorders, or emotional stress, this room is a “soft landing.” It’s a space where they can safely physically engage with their surroundings while regaining emotional regulation.
As with most of our projects, great design is only as good as its installation. On this project, we worked arm-in-arm with our partners with Integrity Built to handle the on-site execution. Their team took our custom-engineered panels and the Michigan Medicine vision and fused them together.

The result was a perfectly fitted, curved padded wall that looks as good as it performs. The professional craftsmanship ensured that every inch of the room is secure, durable, and ready to provide comfort to the kids who need it most.
Whether it’s a curved wall in a world-class health system or a high-traffic school gym, our team specializes in the details that others overlook. We don’t just provide padding; we provide peace of mind.
